Marriage is not an immutable institution that locks Indian society into ‘tradition.’ Rather, for marriage to endure as a compulsory institution, it adapts to economic and social conditions. Through specific empirical studies, this workshop aims to understand how the contemporary marriage market is changing under the influence of diverse factors like access to education, particularly for girls; job shortages; the precariat labour market; and the agrarian crisis.
