Abstract: This essay argues that the independent Bangladesh cannot be compre hended without an understanding the centrality of the intersectionality of the agrarian structure and relations, society, state and politics in its former self–the East Pakistan. This historicity of the institutional and cultural memory is necessary as much of the core structures of its former self, with newer dimensions, continued as the structuring principle even after the establishment of independent Bangladesh in 1971. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government following the February 2026 Bangladesh general elections conducted under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus since August 2024 after the fall of Awami League government is not in a position to alter the fundamental class character of the state and nature of the society. Behind an interim technocratic and ‘respectable’ façade, and then a ‘democratically elected government’, the technologies of domination and coercion apparatuses of the old order–police, army, judiciary, bureaucracy, corrupt political struc tures and education system remain intact. At the same time, Islamist forces such as Jamaat-e-Islami have been rehabilitated and emboldened, seeking to impose a reactionary social order and are attempting to present their fundamentalism as nationalism. This process has been further facilitated by the perceived Indian regional hegemonism and the consoli dation of Hindutva authoritarianism.
