About the talk:

The present government came to power in 2014 with the much vaunted promises for improving the state of higher education. In the years that have followed, universities and colleges have been in the news certainly, but only for the widespread student and teacher unrest. Popularly, this unrest has been cast in the trope of a resistance to the clampdown on the rights of freedom of thought and expression and other Constitutional values, such as scientific temper. However, this talk, using data generated by various reports of the government and the All-India Survey of Higher Education, will suggest that the reduction in the public funding of higher education may be a much more serious explanation to this unrest.

Ayesha Kidwai teaches at the Centre for Linguistics, School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
